Learning in Second Life
This resource provides an introduction to Second Life by Karelia Kandor, who has recently started using Second Life for language learning activities. The resource is a video that describes what it is like to be a newcomer to Second Life and provides some tips on its use. The video explains how Karelia improved her language skills through the practical tasks set for her class, such as going to the cinema or to a shop.

The size of the video display area can be increased to full screen by clicking a button at the bottom-right of the video screen. The sound volume can also be adjusted.
You can join Second Life for free at http://secondlife.com. You will then need to download the software, after which you will be able to build yourself an Avatar, which is the character you appear as in Second Life. You will need to spend some time learning how to move around this virtual world.
The Joint Information Services Committee (JISC) have created a guide to getting started with Second Life. It is aimed at those in further and higher education but contains many tips that are useful for anyone who wishes to use Second Life.
