Finding and Sharing Existing Resources

Summary:

There are a vast number of really useful resources on the Internet. The challenge for most people is finding the resources they want, as with busy lives we have little time to spend searching for the right resources. In order to help you to find resources you may need in your work, a social bookmarking site has been set up that provides links to websites and resources relevant both to informal adult learning, and to the use of technology with learners.

When you are working at your own computer and you come across a website that is of interest to you, you can bookmark it or add it to your favourites list. A social bookmarking site allows you to save your favourite website links online. This has the advantage that you do not need to be at your own computer to access your list of favourite websites. It will be available on any computer connected to the Internet. You can share your favourite list with others, so you could build a social bookmarking site for a specific course or for your organisation.

When you add a website to a social bookmarking site, you can also provide a brief description of the site. This is very useful for reminding yourself what the site contains and why you were interested in it in the first place. It also helps the people you share your bookmarking site with to find websites that will be of interest to them. Social bookmarking sites also allow you to 'tag' each of your favourite websites with key words that help to identify its contents and allow you to search for sites much more quickly. For example, if you found a website about gardening which had a really good section on roses, you would bookmark the site, provide a description and 'tag' it with keywords such as 'gardening' and 'roses'. At a later stage, searching your list of websites using the keyword 'roses' would bring up this site and any others you had tagged with the same word.
